A letter from Pastor Nina

Welcome!

A letter from our pastor

I know that walking through the door of a big old stone building full of strangers is not an easy thing to do. Some folks here will greet you eagerly, others will be more reserved. We are a community of regular people, old and young, reserved and outgoing, saint and sinner.

I believe that all questions are good questions. Here at Bethlehem, people are free to doubt and free to ask the hard questions. I don't have all the answers, but I have found that open discussions often help us with our difficult questions about our relationship with God.

Maybe we will see you Sunday, 10am? All are welcome, come as you are and who you are. There is no dress code.

Blessings on your day,
Pastor Nina

About Bethlehem Lutheran Church Tacoma

About Our Congregation

This congregation has been on McKinley Hill for over 100 years and at our current location since 1948. This large building was built by members who came together in the evenings to lay the foundation and participate in the construction. We are a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, or ELCA (www.elca.org).

Bethlehem Lutheran Church has seen the East Side of Tacoma go through many changes, and it is currently experiencing changes of its own as it seeks to make the transformation from an ethnically Norwegian Lutheran congregation to a congregation that embraces people from all backgrounds, countries and experiences.

What to expect when visiting Bethlehem Lutheran Church Tacoma

What You Can Expect

Our Sunday Morning Worship at 10am is based on a liturgical format — meaning that it has a specific order to it. If you are not familiar with a liturgical worship, don't worry... all you need to do is relax and we will carry you along until you feel comfortable enough to join in. It is not hard, and it is not demanding. We sing hymns, (some old time favorites and some more current ones), read scripture, pray, and participate in the sermon.

What we believe at Bethlehem Lutheran Church Tacoma

Our Beliefs

As Lutheran Christians we believe that we are simultaneously saint and sinner. We are forgiven by God's act of redeeming love in Jesus Christ, yet we are still human and prone to thinking only about our own needs. But through the power of the Holy Spirit we are lifted up and through the gift of grace we become beloved children of God and free to love and serve our neighbor... even the ones that we find hard to like.

It is God who creates us, God who redeems us, and God who sustains us. Father, Son and Holy Spirit, the one true God invites you and me into a Holy relationship that can never be broken or diminished. For God so loved the world that God redeemed the world in Jesus Christ. Because of this gift of grace in Jesus Christ we are free to serve, free to be who God created each one of us to be, and assured of eternal life.

Building Community

Click on one of our ministries below to learn more and find out how you can get involved.

  • Food Bank

FISH Mobile Food Truck serves the neighborhood each Monday afternoon from 1-3pm. We provide 3-4 volunteers every Monday and are always looking for help.

You can also bring non-perishable food to church and put it into the basket for our weekly offering. Our food goes to help stock FISH Food Bank each Monday. If you want to stretch your giving put a check or cash in an envelope marked FISH and put it into the offering plate. Then they can buy what they know they need.

Noisy Offering: Every few weeks the kids will collect your spare change in their brightly colored piggy banks. All this spare change adds up to quite a good chunk of change for FISH Food Bank — the kids chosen charity.

  • Quilters

The quilters meet Tuesday morning at 9:30am and a new group is forming and plans to meet every 2nd and 4th Tuesday evening at 6pm. Many of the completed quilts are given to Lutheran World Relief who then disperses them in refugee camps around the world. Some of our quilts are given away to local shelters.

  • Education

Theology on Tap: Meets the 1st Tuesday of the month usually around 5:30pm. We gather to discuss theological issues. In this group there is no “right or wrong questions or answers”. It is a safe place to ask tough questions and share spiritual ideas. We don't always agree. But that is OK. The location may change so check our announcement page the week before.

AACE (All Ages Christian Education): Meets Wednesday evenings during the school year. (Except for Advent and Lent when we have soup suppers followed by worship). AACE begins with a simple dinner at 5:30pm and then everyone goes to an age appropriate bible study. This is our version of Sunday School. We meet in the Fireside Room and the Fellowship Hall in the basement.

  • Choir & ETC

Voice Choir: Make a joyful noise... all are welcome. The choir meets for practice before worship each Sunday morning at 9am in the choir room on the second floor. Once a month choir meets after worship for an extended practice.

Flowers: Interested in providing flowers for the altar? There is a sign-up board in the back of the sanctuary.

After-Worship Coffee Fellowship: Provide coffee and something simple to eat for a time of fellowship after worship.
